THE "ELEVATORS" FAVORITE MOVE

Mike Dulaney, What's your favorite move?

"My favorite move is the Facial Slam.  I like dunk contests and break-aways, but to me there is nothing more exhilarating than bangin' on a defender.  I see the lane open up and my eyes light up, my heart starts thumping, and my mind starts racing.  The Facial Slam is all about attacking the basket.  You are competing against the defender in an aerial chess match.  It amounts to who is the better athlete, who is the better jumper.  I get off the ground so quick and so high that it's really unfair to the defender."

What do you mean "Better Jumper"?

"I mean I am an overall more talented jumper.  I get off the ground quicker, I jump and spin better, I hop out to the side faster, and I can jump off of two feet as well as off of one foot with maximum power.  "

Would you consider yourself to be a genetic jumper?

"No.  I had way under a 30" vertical and I could not slam off of both feet.  When I was majoring in Kinesiology in college, I hooked up with my strength coach and became one of the developmental athletes in the Science of Jumping Program.  It emphasized optimal jumping technique coupled with explosive plyometric training and I gained 10" on my vertical the first year.  I have gained 13" inches so far, and I'm not stopping there.  So genetics is a factor, but it's not the only factor.  The main factor is optimal training."

So the Facial Slam can be thought of as a duel between jumpers?

"Yes.  Absolutely.  That's exactly what it is.  I'm attacking the rim and I know he's going after my shot.  So it amounts to who is the stronger, better jumper.  When I'm in that situation, my training is what really comes into play.  I'm confident that my jump training is the best and is based on sound, scientific principles.  I know my overall jumping technique is better than my opponents.  That gives me true confidence so I can let my body flow.  I know I can beat the man to the apex of our jumps, and when I do - WHAM, right in the grill, baby."

How does the Facial Slam feel?

"Like Heaven."
